FROM PURE TO PERSONAL
In celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Egg™ chair we have chosen to work with the most exclusive materials. Not only do the new materials reflect the iconic design itself. They also enhance the personality of each and every Egg chair from head to toe. Overall, the materials carefully selected for this anniversary edition are chosen to make individual statements. Each home inhabiting the anniversary Egg makes its mark on the materials. The keyword is ‘purity’ because pure materials will become personal with time.
The materials vary from the soft and serene PURE leather, the rich and smooth SERA wool fabric, to a 23 karat gold coated base, all of which will create patina and an expression of their own with time. The serenity of nature was the starting point for the design process of the 60th anniversary. The idea was to unite the renowned heritage with a design that was relevant in time. The result is a design appealing to all senses with a mission to turn pure materials into personal design objects.
The Egg and Swan chair comes in a limited number up to 1958 pieces each. Each chair will feature a special 60th anniversary leather engraving, with numbering and is available until stock runs out.
A small luxury booklet will be delivered as gift with each purchased Egg chair.
The Drop chair, the KAISER idell floor lamp and the accessories are available in stores until December 31st 2018.
HOME OF THE EGG™
This 60th anniversary salutes the silhouette of the Egg™, the Swan™ and the Drop™ chairs as well as the design hotel - the SAS Royal Hotel - they were originally created for. Today, they represent the essence of Arne Jacobsen and his time of glory within Danish design. A time we want to celebrate through a selection of exclusive materials, a pure and natural colour palette and a constant respect for Arne Jacobsen's original ways of working.
The year was 1960 when the SAS Royal Hotel opened its doors for the first time - and when the Egg™ first met its audience. Being part of Arne Jacobsen’s gesamtkunstwerk - the German expression for combining several art forms - the Egg originated as part of a collection. This collection consisted not only of furniture; it also contained everything from the cutlery in the hotel restaurant to the knobs on the end of the curtain’s drawstring as well as the hotel architecture. The hotel design truly made its mark on Arne Jacobsen as a furniture designer. A mark that was to become the beginning of a long series of iconic furniture - most of them still found in the Republic of Fritz Hansen™ collection today.
Besides the Egg, Arne Jacobsen created the Swan™ chair, the Drop™ chair and the Series 3300™ sofa and easy chair. And whilst the building was often titled “the punch card” due to its resemblance to a stiff and straight piece of cardboard, Arne Jacobsen’s furniture always had a soft, organic expression.
