A TIMELESS HOME FOR A SWEDISH COMPANY
In the Swedish city of Lund, a modern and creative office space serves as the award-winning home for renowned company Axis. The 42,000-square-metre headquarters was recently designed in collaboration with Landen Krantz architects with a particular focus on employee health, wellbeing and sustainability.
At the heart of the headquarters, the central foyer was designed as a ‘living room’ for Axis’ 1,300 employees – a place to meet and mingle in a calm, homely environment. Here, sharp lines and organic curves pair with muted neutral tones to add a feeling of warmth and humanity to the office, with lush green plants dotted throughout.
The layered design encourages informal, spontaneous meetings – whether that is conversations at the coffee machine or creative collaborations on the outdoor terraces. A series of 136 meeting rooms – ranging from a 60-person auditorium to smaller silent rooms – offer space for employees to gather and collaborate in an inspired setting.
The design ethos champions a space that feels timeless – both in form and functionality. Materials and colours were carefully chosen to stand the test of time, not only sustainably but also aesthetically. In the entrance hall, the floor is crafted using Swedish limestone and ash-wood panels on the walls enhance the acoustics.
Similarly, furniture was hand-picked with an eye for timelessness. In the restaurant and ‘fika’ corners, Arne Jacobsen’s Grand Prix™ chair sits pretty in ash black. Meanwhile, in the café, the N01™ chair by design studio nendo showcases an iconic display of Danish and Japanese aesthetics. Pictured in black, the celebrated chair combines a seat and a back in nine layers of veneer – characteristic of the Fritz Hansen stacking chair collection – while the base is a pure and elegant interpretation of working with solid wood.
Arne Jacobsen’s Pot™ chair is scattered around the entrance hall, sky lounge and throughout the many meeting rooms. Retaining the striking shape of its iconic predecessor, originally created in 1959, the modern rendition meets today’s demands through improved comfort and quality.
Elsewhere, the Little Giraffe™ by Arne Jacobsen and the Coat Tree™ by Sidse Werner add thoughtful design touches – an ode to their Scandinavian roots. Lighting was carefully curated in collaboration with Light Bureau, Axis and Landen Krantz arkitekter.
Since its completion in 2020, the Axis headquarters has been widely celebrated for its exquisite execution, scooping up a series of design awards such as Lund's City Building Award and Sweden’s most beautiful office.
