BLUEBARN: A Legacy Reimagined

Nestled amidst the serene fields of Gyehwa-myeon, BLUEBARN (파란곳간) is a heartfelt tribute to the past and a bold vision for the future. Once two humble warehouses built by a farmer to dry rice and store machinery, this space has been transformed into a café and accommodations. The result is a living embodiment of memory, creativity, and renewal by architect ByoungSoo Cho and the farmer’s three children, who now carry forward their father’s work.

For decades, the barn stood as a silent witness to the farmer’s labour and the siblings’ childhood memories. While other architects proposed demolishing it, Cho insisted it should not be demolished. Instead, he envisioned regenerative architecture that would preserve its essence while assigning it new meaning—honouring the past while embracing the future.

BLUEBARN is not just about preserving old walls but creating a space where people can reconnect with nature and farming heritage. The siblings were inspired by their father’s love for simplicity and his favourite colour, blue, naming the project "BLUEBARN".

Every element of the design reflects these values. The original warehouses remain intact, their rustic charm softened by thoughtful interventions. From the hilltop and garden, visitors can see fields of rice—an homage to their father’s work and a quiet reminder of the journey every grain takes from seed to table.

The interior and exterior design extends this ethos of timelessness and comfort. Outside the accommodations, the Between Lines Deck Chair and Stool invite guests to sit back and take in the surroundings. While the indoor café area features a mix of Vico Duo™and Series 7™ chairs in clear lacquered wood. Around the outdoor areas, Fritz Hansen’s outdoor teak furniture sits easily with the idyllic farmland scenery.

Explaining the choice of Fritz Hansen furniture, Seoyeon Kim shared: “I was captivated by the practicality and elegant curves. Fritz Hansen furniture embodies a somewhat contradictory expression of being both classic and modern. It harmonises beautifully with BLUEBARN’s aim to create a sense of comfort and timelessness, rather than chasing trends.”

For Kim, the project is deeply personal: “I wanted to leave my father’s traces here and understand his heart. Through BLUEBARN, we hope to offer visitors a sense of nostalgia, discovery, and joy.”

As a multipurpose venue, BLUEBARN aims to evolve while staying rooted in its heritage. It invites visitors to connect with the land, its history, and the quiet beauty of imperfection. At its heart, BLUEBARN is more than a building—it’s a celebration of renewal, community, and the enduring value of simplicity.
