Texture effect

Transform your space with texture.

Studies show that textures influence our moods and perceptions, but texture is usually considered at the end of creating and redecorating interiors.

In interior design, texture simply refers to the appearance, or tactile quality, of a surface. Incorporating different textures in a room can evoke different sensations.

‘Some materials, like silk, having a cooling effect while others, like wool, have a warming effect,’ says Berlin-based multidisciplinary designer Nadine Goepfert, who is interested in exploring how materials and textiles impact human patterns of behavior.

Rough textures can add visual depth into a room and create a sense of cosiness, while smooth textures can add a sleek feel to a space.

Whenever redecorating, Goepfert says it’s important to start by considering the function of the room and the atmosphere you want to create.

“Figure out what kind of materials or textures you’re drawn to – and that can contribute to giving you a good feeling in that particular space,” says the designer.

Everything from furniture finishes, the materiality of home accessories, and plants can bring layers of texture into a room. How does the fabric of a sofa interact with the rug underneath it? How does the matt finish of a vase complement a wooden shelf, or how does the light reflect on surfaces within the space?

Find a mix of textured elements that promote balance and well-being for you.
