Series 7™

The Series 7™ designed by Arne Jacobsen is by far the most sold chair in the history of Fritz Hansen and perhaps also in furniture history. The pressure moulded veneer chair is a further development of the classic Ant™ chair. Series 7™ comes in different veneers and finishes. All chairs are made of pressure moulded sliced veneer. Front upholstery or full upholstery is available in a wide range of fabrics and leather types.

THE MAKING OF GREAT DESIGN

Blending technology and expert craftsmanship, the Series 7 chair comes to life.
Arne Jacobsen’s stacking chairs are some of the most important chair designs in production today. The Series 7™ was designed in 1955 and – ever since – Fritz Hansen has produced the chair for customers around the world.

What began as a popular chair in Denmark is now used in homes in Tokyo and conference spaces in Germany. While its popularity has expanded, the craftsmanship that underpins this extraordinary design has evolved gradually.

Today, the Series 7 and AJ stacking chairs are produced in Fritz Hansen’s owned and operated factory in Europe where employees and technology work together to create high quality, beautiful seating.
Human hands sort veneer to pair pieces which match aesthetically and look for any signs of damage.

This attention to detail and human aspect of production is part of what makes natural veneer chairs extremely beautiful, ensuring that chair backs complement chair fronts even when using unique, natural materials.

A carpenter stacks 9 sheets of veneer and cuts them by hand to get the signature Series 7 shape. He works with a mill machine and the strength of his arms and hands to ensure the cut is smooth and the shape is flawless.

Then the middle of the shape – the area which will bend to create a chair – must be sprayed by hand to prevent cracking in the press.

After the chair is pressed and the shape is set, a computer-controlled mill rounds the edges of the shape. Final sanding of the surface and edges must be done by hand, with close attention that only a human eye can provide.

This process is about man and machine working together for accuracy and beauty at every step of the process.

Every Series 7 chair is hand cut and hand upholstered. Technology hasn’t made human touch and skill irrelevant. In fact, for producing great designs like the Series 7, human hands are as essential as they were in creating the original design.
