The café where thoughtfulness and care shine through every detail

Sonny stands out in a bustling city as an inviting combination of wholesome dishes, thoughtful design, and a sense of community. Co-owners, David and Sara's commitment to sourcing local, organic ingredients and preparing everything in-house from the menu to the décor, shines through in an atmosphere that is both welcoming and refined.

Outside the newly opened café, large umbrellas shade clusters of small tables on the wide sun-drenched boulevard. A glimmer of gold on the big windows reads "Sonny," the second café of its name in the Copenhagen area.

David and Sara are the couple behind the Sonny cafes. David, who has had many years working in the industry, invited his partner Sara to join him in making his vision for an inviting and unique café in their home city. That was in 2017. Neither have looked back since.

With the second Sonny location opening in spring 2023, in a city filled with cafés and bars, David reflects on the philosophy behind Sonny, saying, “I think Sonny attracts people because we have good products, and we really care about the details. We’ve kept the focus on quality and I believe people can feel that, and they trust that.”

The details inside the café show the level of care and thought put into every aspect. Sara explains how the décor began with an antique Italian glass lamp—several of which are found throughout the café. As a collector of unusual and beautiful design objects at auctions, when she saw the lamps, she knew she had found an anchor around which the café's design would flourish. Blue and orange tones set against clean white predominate the café's interior colour scheme.

The cushions and upholstered benches were hand-sewn by Sara and her mother. The striking square motifs on the counter are the handwork of Sara. Slim metal shelving and coat hooks by design collaborator Borg Brückner share a small wooden block in common that references the wood of the benches.

The design of Sonny Cafe is a true reflection of the owners’ attention to detail. In contrast to the linear space, the soft curves of AntTM chairs in a blue-grey tone and a warm orange colour add a touch of playful elegance. In Sara’s words, “I think they are very beautiful, and you sit comfortably. They’re light and playful and don’t take up too much space so I just think they work really well in a place like this.” Step outside where Sonny’s ever-popular outdoor area is shielded from the sun by Atlantis Umbrellas from Skagerak by Fritz Hansen. The seamless integration of the indoor and outdoor spaces adds an extra dimension to the café experience, allowing patrons to soak in the vibrant energy of the city while indulging in Sonny Cafe's culinary delights.
