Outdoor Workplace Design at Fritz Hansen’s Headquarters

Under Open Skies at Work

In the lush gardens hemmed in by the old beech forest in the spaces where office life and leisure time meet, Fritz Hansen has expanded their famously beautiful built environment into the surrounding natural spaces, adding a new dimension to the modern workplace.

As a destination in itself, Fritz Hansen is proud to host international and local visitors from, architects to students looking to expand their knowledge of the history and future of Danish design. Throughout our headquarters, extraordinary design pieces create an inspiring atmosphere, heightening the wellbeing of all within the walls.

The Fritz Hansen headquarters have been in Allerød, north of Copenhagen for over 100 years. The location was chosen because at the forest’s edge, the Hansens could build a sawmill and obtain the wood for manufacturing on their doorstep. Although no longer used for wood, the forest provides a serene backdrop and a natural reminder of Fritz Hansen’s origin story.

“Incorporating outdoor areas into the workplace is a way to invest in employee well-being, creativity, and productivity, ultimately benefiting both the workforce and the organization as a whole.” -Gensler Research

Expanding the workplace experience to the outdoors with tables, benches, lounge areas, and sun chairs has brought the company that much closer to the natural world that has inspired so much of the design. With icons named Egg™, Swan™, and Drop™ among our collection, and our design connection to Nordic nature, taking our daily work life closer to our designers’ inspiration has created a palpable thread between iconic design and people here today.

Extending Into Nature

Sunny days in Allerød means the canteen overlooking the gardens is empty at lunchtime as the rows of Overlap Tables and Benches fill up. Informal meetings and afternoon coffee breaks are commonplace on the comfortable Tradition Lounge or Virkelyst Lounge on the lawn under the shade of umbrellas. The effect is that more socialising is happening organically, and employees are more relaxed and at ease. The benefits of being outside are proven, and the simple act of providing the furniture to facilitate interactions outdoors is transformative.

Commenting on the effect of providing outdoor workspaces and social areas, Christian Andresen, Creative Experience Director at Fritz Hansen says, “We provided a higher quality of office experience by taking advantage of our beautiful surroundings. We introduced inviting furniture that makes sense to our heritage and future. Not only is the presence of the Skagerak Collection lifting moods, but it’s also changing the flow of our daily routines and interactions for the better.”

The Skagerak Collection

The Skagerak Collection offers beautiful design in very high-quality responsibly sourced materials. The outdoor furniture represents a celebration of the symbiotic relationship between design and nature. Crafted using 100% FSC-certified teak and western red cedar, these wood types develop a wonderful patina over time that adds character in a silver-grey colour when left untreated. Just as high-quality leather will bloom over time, so too do the natural wood types in the Skagerak Collection.
